Wow! Thanks for the discussion about our blog post on Wordament.com! We are really happy that you found it useful and it definitely encourages us to write more “engineering blogs” about what we’ve learned. We were also happy to hear how much you enjoy your “investment” (of time) in our game. You should share your screen names! We’ll look for you online when we play,

Thanks for all the coverage and positive feedback on my Dev Tool s/sheet :)
    You guys rock! :D

    SVG Files.

    1. Download SVG file
    2. Double file, IE will open it.
    3. Right Click picture in IE, select “Save picture as”
    4. Choose PNG format.
    5. Import into project.

Also a good tip! I think Travis was doing it the other way because he wanted a “vector” version of the graphic in Blend. ^R

      • Ryan & Travis

Yup. PNG format is much easier, but you don’t get the “scalability” of importing it as a path. With a path you can stretch, transform, color, the shape however you want!

Great show guys, I have been following your shows for a long time.
I have this feeling that you don’t engage the guests in the conversation, most of the time guests just listen
    to you guys talking.

The most annoying thing is whenever you end the story you end it with “Did you check that Travis/Ryan?”
I want listen to the guests more.

    • Ryan & Travis

Thanks for the feedback, Prashant. ^R

I think you guys might be missing the Tango beat . Don’t think Zune (Microsoft making everything). Think like Windows Phone, but without the phone. Microsoft is seriously missing this market right now.

The iPod Touch is a way for kids to get sucked in young and stick with the ecosystem. When they have 4 years of allowance sucked into songs and apps what do you think they want for their first phone? iPhone of course.

Microsoft doesn’t have to make the hardware. And it would not be hard to support with your apps. Think about the device caps you set when you submit an app. If you say you need GPS and 3G then the app doesn’t get shown to the user. If you say camera and they don’t have one, they don’t get one shown.

The biggest price in the phones is the screen, and the extra chipsets. 3G is by far the most expensive. You can get basic WIFI chips for about 1/10 the price of the 3G chip. Get rid of the camera and you knock another $20+ off the price. Get rid of the need for a SIM card, no chip needed to read that, get rid of the SD card, etc. You could pair the device down to a single system on chip (SOC) board in the MP3 price range (without the screen).

I seriously hope that there is no fork in the code, but I don’t think there has to be one. The device caps and other things are already in place to support all this. I hope that is what the Windows Phone team is thinking, scale down based upon caps already built into the system. Don’t fork or require new apps. That would be suicide for the new device (think about the KIN!).

It’s a great point. Microsoft (aside from Xbox) has been challenged in the hardware arena. There could be an opening for partners like Samsung, Acer, Dell, etc. to make music players running a limited version (sans phone) version of Windows Phone. That seems closer to Microsoft’s model of driving great partner relationships.

Of course, one wonders if this is where Windows 8 is headed? The idea of getting Windows to run on smaller, and smaller hardware could put full-blown Windows into all sorts of insteresting form factors. Including rich media players.

      Thanks for the comments! ^T

hey Ryan and Travis, love the new website… but my Zune won’t update and grab the latest episode, also when i click on the Zune subscribe icon on the webpage, i get a Zune error stating that i’m in an unsupported region??? the UK? really? (I got the 4.8 rollout last week by the way) i have just managed to get the mp3, so i get to listen at least!
    Thanks!

      Ricki,

I’m sorry Zune is making this so hard! :( Try adding the podcast manually to Zune.

While in Zune click “Collection” and, towards the bottom, click “Add Podcast”. Finally, paste this url, http://wpdevpodcast.com/?feed=podcast, and click “Subscribe”.

Let me know how you go! :)

      Thanks Ricki,

      -Ryan

Thanks Ryan, that’s worked… and i have a new icon too!

also i’ve listened to “Tango and a Dirty Penny”, as usual very good! in reply to the guy that left a VM which you played out, i would imagine that some of your listeners are like me and are just “enthusiasts” rather than developers. I didn’t reply to your “weigh in wednesday” last week becuase i didn’t want to muddy the water, but some people may have, this would explain the apparant lack of apps from your listeners. So please don’t forget that some of us are just geeks who like to absorb infomation and technology (and maybe wish that one day they could design and write it!) LOL!

        Thanks

        Ricki

        • Ryan & Travis

Great point! And don’t worry. We dig our enthusiast listeners too!! Developing apps isn’t for everyone, so we make sure the content is for the widest audience possible! :-)
          Thanks for joining us. ^T
